Go Ahead...Giggle like you're 14 years old again....I did.

2.28.2009
I'm not sure if this is the best post to put up on a Sunday, but I had to share some inappropriately funny things I saw in Lancaster yesterday. And, as if you needed proof, I have the humor maturity of a 14 year old.

We went to eat at this great Amish Restaurant and the building next to it was also a restaurant/store which sold it's own homemade sweets. Here's what the sign said. I laughed like an idiot.

Yes, it's called The Outhouse and grossly, they make fresh fudge daily. Ick. Nothing like a poo joke to get your Sabbath day started off right, eh? And it gets better. I have noticed a few rather disturbing city names in Pennsylvania and this country store was not about to let that uncomfortable opportunity to capitalize on sophomoric humored individuals, like me, pass them by. Here they have taken an assortment of the best town names and replicated their city signs so you can hang them in your bachelor pad and laugh really hard, when you're drunk with your Frat brothers, about living in Blue Ball, PA. If only I could think of an unmarried Mormon friend to give the Virginville sign to.

{Sigh}
Wasted potty-humor.

I'm A Super Genius

2.27.2009

Last night, Matt went to bed around 10:00 pm. I decided to take all of my medicine I take each night when he went to bed so that I didn't wake him later by turning on our bathroom light. I went in and grabbed my medicines in a hurry and washed them down with some nice, cold water.

Then I began working on a much overdue scrapbooking assignment and I called Emily Foley to chat while I worked. The conversation started out normally enough, but about an hour in I was finding it difficult to find words and losing my train of thought and feeling excessively fatigued. I kept apologizing and mumbling something about how my "pregnancy brain" never went away after I had my last baby.

I finally stumbled into bed at 1:00 am and fell into a deep sleep. This morning I awoke with the girls at 7:00 am and felt like a train had run over me. I was seriously groggy. I went into the bathroom to wash my hands after changing Fifi's diaper and saw the medicines I had taken the night before on the counter. And there, instead or my usual white pill among the other bottles was a similarly sized other white pill that turned out to be a muscle relaxer. Now, let me say, that I keep these muscle relaxers around for if I ever strain my back and I usually cut them into 4ths. And last night I took a whole one.

That's what I call a Super-Genius.

Ella's Birthday Pt.2

Today at noon we met some of Ella's friends at Moon Bounce for her friend party. I heard a few years back that to throw a successful birthday party you should only have as many guests as the age your child is turning. So we had Ella and four guests and it was perfectly low key and fun. Ella was fearless on the Moon Bounce equipment.

Evangeline was not fearless. She was totally afraid and cautious. She could not even muster up the courage to take on the mini toddler's slide. I even took her up to the top of the big slide twice and went down with her (I am positive this broke some sort of weight restriction, but nobody stopped me so.....). Eva liked going down with me and even once on her own, but would not attempt climbing the stairs and going down on her own. Until Dana stepped in.

Dana Delaware (as we call her) took Eva up twice and then Eva was hooked. She climbed the never ending steps of the huge slide over and over again on her own and flung herself down.

Hooray for braving a new experience!

The other friends who came were Dana's daughter Jenny and Ella's crush Parker and his little brother Tyler.

Ella got wonderful gifts. A pink backpack, which she wore and refused to take off for the remainder of the day, and two little craft sets. She adores crafts! This party with her friends was so much fun. We are thinking of buying anytime passes for our girls since they had such a great time at the Moon Bounce today.

Tonight we finish off with family presents (pink sparkle shoes and a play-do fun factory) and after dinner, we get to partake of the most crazy-looking toddler decorated cake of all time. I let my used-to-work-in-a-bakery control freak go and allowed Ella to help frost and decorate her 5 layer cake. It is a sight to behold. Slightly off center, tipping, covered in crumbs and housing an alarming amount of pink sprinkles and pink edible glitter. It is ringed with small ballerinas in pink tutus. She even helped write her name on the top with icing. Ella really loved helping decorate the cake and says it is the most beautiful cake she has ever seen. I am so glad I let her help....wonky outcome and all.

Ella's Birthday Pt.1

2.26.2009
I only have a few moments to post since it's 1:26 am and tomorrow begins phase 2 of Ella's birthday. So here's a recap of today.

- Awoke to the living room decorations. Ella was ecstatic. Had cereal and pink applesauce for breakfast.

- Lost the car keys which made us 20 minutes late for Ballet class and started the day with tears. Don't worry, we recovered.

- After class we hit Panera for lunch. The girls had whole wheat grilled cheese sandwiches and organic yogurt tubes. I had a sourdough bowl of French Onion Soup. Perfection.

- Dropped into Target and bought birthday presents for Ella. I brought a blanket in from the car and hid them in the cart under the blanket.

- Came home. Naps for the girls. Baked 3 different sized circular cakes. Assembly begins tomorrow.

- Met Matt at the Oasis Family Fun Center in PA and played for a few hours. The Jungle Gym was fun and the girls played happily for about an hour. Eva was particularly enchanted with the tunnel tubes.

But the star of the night was mini bowling. They had tiny balls, pins and lanes with no gutters. A big hit.

- Dinner was at Ella's fave burger joint (and mine) 5 Guys Burgers and Fries. Here she is munching on their appetizer peanuts.

- Both girls fell asleep in the car on the way home. I guess presents and cake will wait until tomorrow after the "Friends" party.

Conversation With a Birthday Princess

Conversation from last night at the dinner table...

Me: Ella, your birthday is soon. Would you like a cake or cupcakes.
Ella: Mom! Cupcakes are for Valen-times Day! I want a cake.
Me: Okay. What color do you want.
Ella: Pink. With sprinkles and sparkles and some white. And little girls dancing on it.
Me: What color do you want the inside to be.
Ella: Yellow.
Me: Okay. So Pink...
Ella: And white.
Me: Pink and white frosting with sprinkles and little girls.
Ella: AND sparkles. Sprinkles AND sparkles. You forgot the sparkles.
Me: Oh yes, how could I forget the sparkles?!
Ella: And no ugly brown mountains, just pink dancing girls.
Me: Okay. I'll see what I can do.
Ella: Thanks. You're a good Mom . . . . . . . . Oh, and make sure you hide the cake so some sneaky fox doesn't come and steal it out of the house.
Me: Okay. I'll make sure it's safe.

I guess last year's 8 layer cake decorated as a princess castle has been forgotten already.
We'll see what materializes this year.
I'm still working on it.

She's Four!

2.25.2009
Four is my favorite age for children.
I taught four-year-olds for three years a while back and I adore them.
And today...little Ella turns four.

I will never forget how small she was. When we finally got to bring her home from the NICU and we had this picture taken on her 1 month birthday...oxygen and all.

The sass started early and a spunky little personality emerged. This was her Winston Churchill look-alike phase. Followed directly by a Donald Trump phase.

She showed endless patience for her Mommy when I was sick for an entire 9 months while pregnant with Evangeline. Poor kid...every time she saw a bowl of any sort she would put her mouth to the edge and say blech! as if throwing up into it. That probably damaged her for life.

As she grew she was always playful and happy. She has a real Jois De Vivre.

But she is also a wonderfully loving big sister, expert snuggler and sensitive soul. She cried the other day when Matt didn't win Candyland.

Of course, we have a pretty fun day planned. You may have to stop back tomorrow for the official low-down. But for now, the front room is completely decorated with pink balloons and streamers and a big 'ol HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign so that when she wakes up this morning we start the day off right! Today is Ballet and then family dinner at a kid's jungle gym. Friends Party on Friday at some sort of Bounceland. And a huge-O cake to make an appearance at some point.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SWEET LITTLE CHICKEN!

Wicked Cool

2.24.2009
You may know that I kind of dislike tags.
Do you all really care if I prefer milk or soda?
Autumn of Spring? I barely care myself.

But, once in a while a tag comes along that is different. And brilliant. And makes you smile a bit. I was tagged by Pam Callaghan for this and it's wicked cool.
You are making your first album.

Follow these instructions:

1 - BAND NAME Go to "wikipedia." Hit “random article”or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - ALBUM TITLE Go to "Random quotations"or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - COVER ART Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use Photoshop or similar software to put it all together.

5 - Create a mix CD you feel reflects your band.
(Okay, I made that last step up, but won't it be fun?!)

I think mine turned out to be a cool Indie album. LOL!
And the title, "How To get the Bark On". Perfection!
You know that someone from my Handmade Ambush
is going to be getting this CD as a mix.
Maybe a collection of raspy-voiced, folksy, British, female artists?
Indeed.

Get Ready for the Low Down!

2.23.2009

For years I have been hounding anyone I could for advice on certain scrapbooking tools. Our budget has always been very tight and I am so reluctant to spend money on scrapping tools that will end up sucking. I have searched on Message Boards and online for a comprehensive Scrapbooking rating site that was much like Consumer Reports. And it doesn't exist. Sure, there are some sites that review products, but those sites either sell ad space (which makes me question their unbiased opinion) or you have to wade through 10 gazillion articles to find what you're looking for.

My good friend, Heidi, and I have been cooking up a great idea. It's a non-profit, Consumer Reports for Scrappers. And after much leg work and organization I am so proud to introduce you to The Scrap Review. Here is our mission statement so you can get a feel for what we're going to offer.

We are a group of crafters who wanted to know the real deal about new products, expensive tools and industry trends. We report on and review everything from adhesives to trimmers to big ticket personal cutting systems. With easy and comprehensive rating systems and TSR top picks, choosing the right products to add to your stash is just a click away.

We strive to be an interactive community where all are welcome to share opinions, ideas and inspiration. We have candid articles, a monthly newsletter, lots of give-aways and commit to bring you the latest and greatest from the Scrapbooking world.

Sounds great huh? And you don't even know who is on our staff yet. That will truly blow you away! Emilie Ahern, Noel Culbertson, Aly Dosdall, Paula Gilarde, Anne Hafermann, Elizabeth Kartchner, Susan Keuter, Layle Koncar, Mou Saha and Heidi Sonboul. Can you believe that group of ladies?

We are having our World Wide site launch on March 1-7th with 7 days of Give-Aways! Woot! Please drop by and check out our entire site. You will see how comprehensive, easy and thorough we are and how helpful this site will become before you spend cash on your stash! You'll also see the many ways to be entered into our daily drawings for prizes. Hope to see you there!

Handmade Ambush!

2.21.2009

The deal: I will draw 5 random people who comment on this post and they will receive something made by me. To you! It will be my choice and made especially for you. Leave your comment here before 11:59 pm EST tonight (Sunday). *NOW CLOSED* Just so we’re on the same page, here are the rules.

The details: No guarantees you will feel absolute true love, but possibly happiness, fervor, or chocolate. What I create will be just for you. It will be done sometime this year. You have no clue what it will be… it may be a story. Maybe poetry. (Well, probably not either of those.) I may draw or paint something. It will most likely be a wicked mix CD or a home-sewn Mystery Hero Bunny. But I may bake something and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you! That’s for sure. I reserve the right to do something extremely kooky.

The fine print (which is actually the same size, but whatever): If you are chosen, you must re-post this on your blog and offer the same to 5 people who do the same on their blog. When you get your lovely homemade goods from me, post a picture on your blog so I know my love arrived without a hitch.

Before you type in your name I think that you should know a few things.
#1. Do I care if you actually follow the rules? No...but Karma will.
#2. Do I care if we know each other? No, but you will be subject to my taste!
#3. I love this idea. Thanks Jenny!

AND THE 5 AMBUSHEES ARE...

Something To Scrap With - Etsy finds

2.20.2009
I really love Esty. I love the concept and I love the little gems found here and there as you browse. I love that handmade items are cool again!

I recently got some very cute cut-out papers from an Etsy shop called The Scrappy Shack. This shop is filled with cardstock cutouts of all shapes, varieties and themes and she'll customize them to any color you want. So I ordered this die cut numeric paper in light green and black, and last night I created this layout with it.

Here's a close-up. I raised the numeric paper with adhesive foam dots (by 3L) to make a sort of frame for my photo of little Fifi earlier this month. I really like the effect and I love how this layout turned out. You know, sometimes I make a layout and stare at it and change it a million times and finally finish and then...it's crap. But this was decidedly effortless and I love the results. Gotta love it when the stars align!

THIS and THAT: The "funky little gimpy tripod" Edition

2.19.2009
Yesterday was magic.
I got four things in the mail that made my little heart sing.

1. These delicious stamps from Purple Onion Designs.
Very "Apothecary Chic". That's not a real term, but now it is. And it's going to sweep the Nation!

2. A decidedly playful and bright kit from Kraft Girl Kits. I am their Guest Artist for March and I will be giving sneaks as I create. But for now, just know that this kit is a delight.

3. These amazing fat quarters from Cosmo Cricket. Did you know they now make fabric? Well, they do and I see a home-sewn Mystery Hero Bunny in somebody's future.

4. This funky little gimpy tripod. I got it from eBay for $8 (including shipping) but what it means is that you will now be the recipients (for good or evil) of blog videos. Starring me...or at least my hands. It also means no more stacking encyclopedias up on a chair to take a family picture at Thanksgiving. Good Times.

And finally, I love this idea from the Freckled Nest blog. When I was in college we used to tape a blank peice of posterboard on a common wall and write funny things people said or did on the posterboard throughout the year. It is so amazing how many funny and quirky bits of life we forget!
This artist, Leigh-Ann, made a small book to carry around with her and record those funny moments. It is a long post, but well worth reading for the great advice (useful even if you're not crafty) and the funny tidbits she shared. My personal favorite...."Your first prayer had sabotauge in it." I am totally going to do this. Thanks for the inspiration Leigh-Ann!

A Letter to NBC

Are you kidding me?
I spend all day wrangling children,
administering children's Ibuprofen to my toddler to keep her fever down,
driving to freakin' Maryland to get to a Super Walmart,
carry two sleeping kids up three flights of stairs,
make a delicious dinner,
clean up afterwards,
and now you have the gall to show re-runs of both The Office and 30 Rock.
Is this some sort of sick joke?
How dare you!!!

If You're My Friend....

2.18.2009
- If you want, I'll superimpose your head onto the leading man's arm of your choice. Oh, the Photoshop goodness. (Left: Emily with Orlando Bloom - Right: Lolly with Gerard Butler)

- If you're having a bad day, I'll call your answering machine and sing rock ballads in a truly awful karaoke style. You have got to hear my version of Total Eclipse of the Heart. So bad...it's good. (Heidi)

- You can bawl your eyes out, and you never have to apologize for crying. (Heidi, Lolly)

- I'll take that funny Blogger toolbar off of the top of your blog for you so your grandma doesn't accidentally click it and see porn. (Lizzy, Susan and many others)

My friends are the best in the world and I couldn't live without them!

photos i DIDN'T take...

2.17.2009
Recently I heard that some catty women had remarked about my photo of the Amish family in a carriage on one of my posts. How dare that Emilie Ahern?! What a horrible woman! These women spent precious time discussing what a bad Mormon I am for not respecting the Amish and their desire to not be photographed. Well, funny enough, I didn't take that photo.

And so I guess it's time to come clean about the blog photos I quite obviously didn't take....for those of you who can't figure it out for yourselves, here is my confession.

Not only is THIS a stock photo...

Also, surprise surprise! I also didn't pose these kitties in karate gear and snap this photo in the miniature dojo that sits in my living room...

And, for any of those who wonder, I also never took this photo of Mickey Rourke at the Golden Globes.
.
Awwwww, it feels good to finally come clean about not attending the Golden Globe's and standing on stage in front of Mickey

<--------However, this photo of my secret lover, Becks, was totally taken by me during an intimate night when he professed his love to me and showed me his new chest tattoo.

It's kind of embarrassing how into me he is.

And while I think it's completely sad and ridiculous for people to waste time even thinking about whether or not I am a good person based solely on taking possible photos of the Amish, it has occurred to me that in order to save crazy people undue time and gossip, I will start indicating when a photo I post on my blog is a stock photo.

"October Afternoon" Delight

Today is the big day at the October Afternoon blog. They have an all day carnival of full line reveals and other fun activities. I know I'll be checking in all day long to see what the team has created with these delicious new lines.

And in honor of the sneaks, here is a layout I made last night with the new Cherry Hill line, my favorite line so far. And I got a little jiggy with Martha Stewart glue pens and her amazing glitter. I glittered the title, various cherries and part of the date tag.

And here are some close-ups...

Four Generations

Last night as I was browsing through old photos to decide what to scrap I found this gem, hiding in a folder. This was Mother's Day of 2007. Eva was still an infant and my Mother was in town from Sweden and her mother from Indiana. We all met together at my Granny's house and visited and we snapped this photo. I can't believe I have not looked at it since. It is a great photo of four generations. Ella, myself, my mother and my mother's mother.

I scrapped it using the new Cosmo Cricket line called Ever After, which I adore!!! Here's the finished layout. I kept it very very simple because I am thinking of framing this and hanging it in Ella's room, rather than keeping it in a photo album.

PRODUCTS - Cardstock: WorldWin - Patterned Paper: Cosmo Cricket (Everafter) - Stickers: American Crafts (remarks) - Corner Punch: EK Success - Pen: ZIG - Die Cutting Machine: Cricut - Die Cut Fonts: Opposites Attract, Storybook - Adhesive: 3L permanent runner, 3L foam pop dots.

An Illicit Sick Day Conversation

2.16.2009
Ella is sick today and came to snuggle with me in my bed early this morning. I was wearing a tank top and she saw part of my cleavage peeking out. Oh, the horror! We had the following creepy and possibly emotionally damaging conversation.

Ella: Mommy, when we were snuggling, I could see your boobies.

Me: Hey, there are worse things than seeing my boobies.
People would pay good money to see these boobies.

Ella: Really?! Good! Then maybe we could take the money and go to Chuck E. Cheese's!

Are you calling CPS or should I?

Ca-Raze-Ay!

2.15.2009

I watched this kind of weird special on Discovery channel yesterday about women who gave birth and didn't know they were pregnant. And I just want to say this....are you kidding me? Am I right, Ladies?

Let's discuss pregnancy and the symptoms I have besides weight gain and feeling a human move inside my belly.

Severe nausea, hip displacia, carpel tunnel in my right wrist, eczema on my left arm, heartburn, the 2nd trimester crazy dreams, waddling, my nose gets wider, excess spit, weepiness, cravings for Fritos dipped in chocolate, I could go on and on. Not to mention the kid kicking the crap out of my ribs. I just don't see how it is possible for someone to be 8 months pregnant and not know.

Are these women ca-raze-ay?!!

I would love to know...(1) Do you think it's possible to not know your pregnant until you deliver? and (2) What's the craziest thing that happens to you when you're pregnant?

What A Wonderful Life

2.14.2009
It's no joke. I have a wonderful life.

Yesterday was a fabulous Valentine's Day. We woke up and gave the girls a bath and headed to a Valentine's Day party. The last three days Ella's asthma has been worse than ever. Yesterday, we got new medicine for her nebulizer and it has made a huge difference. Here she is doing her breathing treatment. She was just out of the bath and sat patiently and did her treatment while watching cartoons.

I'm not a big "flowers" girl, but you know I want candy. Matt gave me a beautiful card and a box of delicious chocolates. Then, in the evening, he made our family a love dinner. He hand made Chicken Cordon Bleu, rosemary roasted potatoes and grilled asparagus. What a man! Am I the luckiest girl alive?!!

After the girls went to bed we had our Valentine's Day tradition. Watching When Harry Met Sally and eating junk food. I gave him the Marvin Gaye card I made. He loved it. And then.......well.......you know the rest. {wink!}

Hope every one's day was as filled with love as mine.

That's how we roll!

2.13.2009

While I was watching an *America's Next Top Model marathon this week, the girls appeared in my room in these hilarious outfits. I grabbed my camera and snapped photos.

I love it when my girls act kooky and imaginative like this! Good times.

*And just who is keeping an eye on these two anyway?!!

Reeorr!!!

2.11.2009

Why are we this way? Why, women, why?

I recently ended a professional relationship with a company I was no longer happy with. They had asked me for, and I had freely given, feedback on the things that were difficult for me to deal with. They agreed they needed to change. And they didn't. And scrapping was no longer fun anymore...so I resigned.
And then the claws came out.
But why? It seems that no matter how much integrity and honesty I used in my gracious resignation, I still got the nasty cat-claws email, accusing me of all sorts of unholy things.
But, let me add, in case you were worried about me, I am not too concerned about it. I decided about two years back that I was going to demand a drama free life. I even removed myself from a ring of catty, gossipy, female relatives in order to demand peace in my life. And that peace came. And I love it.
I responded to this accusatory email, defended myself, said what I wanted to say and that's it. I wasn't catty, but I was honest and forthright and I called a spade a spade. And now I am at peace. Any further emails from this company will be deleted without being read or opened by me. Because I absolutely refuse to allow toxic individuals and drama to enter my life. And that makes my life good.
I know who I am. And people who know me know what I stand for. I know what I did for that company and I am happy and satisfied that I gave more than 100%.
And that peace is the greatest kind of peace I know.
.
P.S. This cat photo totally makes me laugh. Do you think Angela from the Office would hang it in her cubicle?

Just another vehicle for adolescent-like craving of acceptance and praise.

2.10.2009

I have been uploading my Project 365 photos to a Flickr gallery since January 1st now and may I say that I have a slightly disturbing craving for comments on my photos. This, like every other online resource, is just one more way for me look for external praise. But why?

Comments on the blog,
friends on Facebook,
reading friends on Goodreads
and now this.

This is puzzling, since I am usually someone who finds fulfillment from within myself and from the many spoken and unspoken gestures from my husband and children. So why would a stranger saying I am a good photographer matter?

I think in the end, we are, all of us, still that 11 year old awkward and zitty pre-teen who wants to get asked to slow dance at Spring Fling and longs for their first kiss.

Please someone tell me I am not the only one. Do you crave blog comments the way I do?

Ouch.

Some woman in Costco just asked me
if Chicken and Fifi were my grandkids.

Ummm....seriously?

CHA Shoes

2.09.2009
Okay, I'm just gunna give it to you straight. Chubby girls really like cool shoes. And I think it's obvious that the reason is...shoes always fit. However, I am the exception.

I have always had large feet. Well, large and wide feet. They have been a size 11 since I was around 12 years old. But then I had babies, and my arch fell a bit and that has plummeted me into the abyss of size 12 shoes. And, I kid you not, I have totally looked into buying shoes intended for drag-queens. But the google search and ensuing websites led into a carnival of Drag Queen websites with images which are still burned into my psyche. I'm just sayin'...these sites generally sell more than just shoes. So I gave up on that one.

But, I stumbled on to two perfectly adorable pairs of shoes right before the CHA. Sure, they were both kind of tight, but we all suffer for fashion right? And it worked. For the first time in my entire life, someone looked down at my feet and said, "Cute shoes!" And the Editor of Scrapbooks Etc. even took a photo of them while we were crushed together in the Press Area, awaiting the arrival of Paris Hilton.

In tribute, I made this layout last night. And I totally love it. Check out the new Dymo Caption Maker which prints lowercase AND script fonts.
