I watched this kind of weird special on Discovery channel yesterday about women who gave birth and didn't know they were pregnant. And I just want to say this....are you kidding me? Am I right, Ladies?
Let's discuss pregnancy and the symptoms I have besides weight gain and feeling a human move inside my belly.
Severe nausea, hip displacia, carpel tunnel in my right wrist, eczema on my left arm, heartburn, the 2nd trimester crazy dreams, waddling, my nose gets wider, excess spit, weepiness, cravings for Fritos dipped in chocolate, I could go on and on. Not to mention the kid kicking the crap out of my ribs. I just don't see how it is possible for someone to be 8 months pregnant and not know.
Are these women ca-raze-ay?!!
I would love to know...(1) Do you think it's possible to not know your pregnant until you deliver? and (2) What's the craziest thing that happens to you when you're pregnant?

My "crazy" pregnancy symptom isn't so strange by itself, it just lasts for way longer than it should. I vomit about 18 times a day until I actually deliver. Runs in the family to have horrible morning sickness for all nine months. Lucky me. And yet I still manage to pack on 40 lbs. even though I'm basically bulimic. Go fig.
Well, I'm 32 weeks right now and pregnancy is pretty easy on me. I get nauseaus and exhausted in the beginning. No throwing up though. I get that really bad stretching pain (round ligament?) but only once during each pregnancy. Oh, and right now my heartburn is pretty darn annoying.
I lost my first pregnancy so I figure having the rest of them go easy on me is what I deserve. :)
I totally have the dreams! With one of my kids I had a dream that Winnie the Pooh was serving me Chinese food from a portable dishwasher........weird!! I also had a specific craving with each kid (things from A&W rootbeer - only from a can, to watermelon combined with mint chip ice cream.
...and I agree - how could you NOT know????
I craved soap...found out it was a serious deficiency in iron. Anemia with a capital A.
My mum is a peads. nurse and has seen it happen. Yep people 8 months pregnant and they thought that the pains were appendicitis!?!
She has also seen women go in for a C-Sec and they found a small twin under the rib cage!? Crazy. I'm 37 weeks at tho mo. I'm pretty sure theres only one. And I don't understand how you couldn't know? Apparently alot has to do with denial? I guess if you tell yourself something enough you will believe it?
Craziest thing would have to be the dreams... Or the nesting. I'm OCD enough as it is, nesting just makes me a mad/crazy women! lol
Kylie
#1. NEVER! Their is obviously more to the story...of the denial variety.
#2. Stretch marks on me feet. REALLY?! Did they have to get that big? Someday I would love to know exactly which purpose that served.
1- i know it would NEVER be possible for me to be prego without knowing. besides looking like i have a 2 1/2 year old in the superman position under my shirt when i was like 10 weeks pregnant... um yah, i think not!
2- an uncontrollable urge to eat spaghetti 7 days a week for 2 meals a day, and sometimes breakfast, too. oh and the awesome feeling that comes from people asking if the baby has dropped yet when you're 15 weeks pregnant (yup, with 25 weeks to go! gotta love that.)
#1:I don't know how you couldn't know!?!
#2:My craziest pregnancy thing was this crazy itchy scalp rash that broke out before I knew I was pregnant w/#3. I couldn't figure out what was going on. The worst thing is that he's 27 months old and it still comes out sometimes!!!! And of course, the drs refuse to admit that it was pregnancy related. UM...I never had this problem before...
Yeah that is pretty crazy. Ummm let's see, my craziness is that I crave Mexican food ALL the time. I don't normally get sick. This last one I was so nauseous all the first tri-mester and would never throw up to get relief, it was sooooo not fun. MY SIL eats dirt while she is pregnant. I kid you NOT!
i saw that! fascinating!!! the part where she goes to the bathroom to try to relieve herself but ends up giving birth without noticing just astounds me. I guess for larger women it might be harder to know cos there is mor padding to soften the kicks?? who knows! people are strange
I saw the same documentary about 2 or 3 weeks ago, just before I gave birth to my 3rd baby. I remember watching it, thinking exactly the same thing as you. I mean - actually seeing my belly move around from side to side was a pretty big giveaway that I didn't just have wind! And those little bubbas can kick pretty hard too!
We saw that documentary too, and thought, NO FREAKING WAY. And I kid you not, two days later, my best friends cousin gave birth and she didn't know she was pregnant!!!! It was beyond bizarre. She thought she was having a heart attack, and went to the hospital, and they told her she was in labor, and she was like, what? No, I'm not pregnant. Oh yes, she was. And she was partying hard during her pregnancy too. So that's not cool. She just thought she was gaining weight, and she didn't feel well because of her lifetstyle. Pretty sad, huh?
How could anyone not know? I knew the second I started bawling at the movie Pollyanna (I'm not a crier). For me the worst pregnancy symptom has been having to pee like every 38 seconds (sorry ladies I never felt sick). The weirdest thing for me is that now when my stomach growls its over on the side. And how could someone not notice the oh so comfortable foot in the ribs?
I guess it MIGHT be possible before you have a kid, but no way after you've already had kids. There have been times that I'm sitting here and go, "whoa! That felt like a baby kick!" when I'm totally not pregnant. So i guess it could MAYBE be possible if you are extremely skinny and don't show at all. Or maybe extremely heavy and don't show at all. But really, no, I think they're crazy. I don't think it's possible. Mysterious missing period for 9 months...mysterious "kick" feelings...mysterious weight gain...no. sorry.
I have to say the 72 pounds I gained with my first pregnancy made it impossible to not know I was pregnant. That and all the lovely side effects you mentioned :)
You should email the fabulous CK HOFer Wendy Bretz! This happened to her! You could interview her for your blog. :) I think it's fascinating, and now I totally want to see that documentary! Oh! And that also happened to my next door neighbor when I lived in California. Very strange, but cool. LOL.
1. Not a chance in this world! Unless you are in a coma for the whole time!
2. I get restless leg syndrome when I'm pregnant. Watch out Honey! I kick the poor guy a lot! I feel sorry about it, but it's not like I can control it. The legs just kick!
you are cracking me up. i've never understood this claim...not to offend anyone who has made said claim...but i'm thinking of a little word that starts with "de-" and ends with "-nial".
i develop a super power when i'm pregnant. it's called super nose! i can smell everything everywhere anytime!! not always a good thing...
I have never had kids so I don't know a thing about cravings and the what not, BUT as a nurse I have witnessed the not knowing your pregnant thing. At first I didn't understand it, but it is possible and doesn't necessarily involve denial...hormone issues causing you to bleed lightly throughout, and Crack/Cocaine usage are the 2 main culprits, but who knows!?!? What a shock to push out a baby after that?? Reason #241 to stay away from drugs!!
whoa...even if i didn't have my husband to inform me i am prego round 4-5 weeks (he says the death threats and stink eye i throw at him are dead giveways!), i'd still figure it out by week 6 or 7.
from the 14th through the 36th week i love being prego, how sad to 'miss' that.
Yes, Emilie, I know a young woman who delivered a healthy baby girl, by herself in her bathroom(dh alseep in the next room). First child. In the 9 months had even had a physical. Yep, that's right. Even the dr. didn't figure it out. Thought she was having kidney problems, it was back labor. Beautiful baby girl, almost 2 now. A week later the 28 yo mother had to have hysterectomy. There's a lot more to the story, but what a blessing that little one is!
