Kinder Fashion

8.31.2010
No, I'm not going to post a new picture of Ella's Kindergarten outfit each day...
but THIS one was just too good to pass up.

6

first day

8.30.2010
today was Ella's first day of Kindergarten.
she was up bright and early and climbed into our bed fully dressed for the day.
she picked out her outfit (don't worry Mom, there are shorts beneath that skirt).
you'll notice there is no shortage of "sparkle" here.

I dropped her off at her main school, Donegal Springs, where she boarded a bus to be shuttled to the Kindergarten Center. As she got ready to board the bus I squeezed her to me and said, "You're going to do great! We are so proud of you. I love you." to which she replied, "Okay, Mom" and hopped onto the bus with no tears...only anticipation.

once dropped off, Evangeline and I headed to the local library where I let her take 30 minutes on the children's computers, check out 4 books and a DVD. I also signed her up for weekly toddler reading time.

when we arrived home she chose a dvd to watch for "quiet time" with no complaint from a Type A older sister. the choice was easy....Enchanted.

at 3:40pm exactly, Evangeline and I were perched at the bus stop down the street to meet the triumphant kindergartner. she hopped off the bus without effort and exclaimed, "Mommy! This was the best day of my life! Do you want to know why?"

"Yes" I replied, "Tell me everything".
and she did.
tales of teacher's assistants, book swap day, her desk neighbor named Erin and much much more.

a happy first day indeed.

2010 Emmy Fashion

8.29.2010
Here it is...my first of the annual award show Fashion wrap-ups on this blog.
Overall, this was a good night for fashion, with a few exceptions.
Here's the scoop, according to me...

BEST DRESSED

Bravo! Lea Michele got it so very right in this look. LOVE it!

Claire Daines has made some odd fashion choices in the past few years, but she was flawless at tonight's show. This picture does not do her justice.

And representing for the men, Chris Colfer looked dapper and flawless from the hair to the tux.

Another Glee cast member shines. Amber Riley looked fantastic in this curve-flattering gown and period hair style.

Jane Lynch was sleek and sophisticated in this outfit. I could have used a bit more volume in the hair, but it's not a deal breaker by any means.

Wowza! Modern Family's Sofia Vergara lives up to her va-va-voom character with this glowing look.

OH, NO YOU DIDN'T

January Jones...is there a plastic hoop lining the hem of your dress? Seriously?

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is wearing some sort of odd, dominatrix look. With hard lines and severe hair, it's no bueno.

Toni Collette worked it at the last awards show...so what's with this water color painting on the bottom of her dress?

Please, say it isn't so. Lauren Graham can do no wrong...until now.

It's hard for me when a member of The Office cast falls, but this look on Mindy Kaling is disastrous from head...or should I say hair...to toe.

MAJOR CRAZY HAIR

Rose Byrne unintentionally gave a nod to Bride of Frankenstein.

Dear Naya Rivera, The dress is nice. The make-up is great....what's with the hair?

and a special new category....
HIT & MRS.

Tom Hanks looks dashing, classic and timeless. Rita Wislon looks downright crazy. And, I hate to be the one to say it but it must be said, she's too old to experiment with a head to toe retro look. Sorry, Rita.

Go ahead, AGREE or DISAGREE at will!

I'm becoming one of THOSE parents

Okay, indulge me for a moment.

For a few months now I have been thinking that our little Evangeline is very good at art. I began thinking this because when Ella and Eva both color at the same time, often the pictures look about the same as far as staying in the lines, etc.

So, today I scanned this page Evangeline colored to see if I am crazy.

( 'Ballerina' by Evangeline - Age 3 - crayon on coloring book )

Don't you think this is pretty good for a 3 year old?

Behold, the Tim Gunn smack down!

8.26.2010
Oh man, was tonight's Project Runway a good one. I mean, they're always good, but the last 10 minutes made me heart sing.

I am speaking, of course, about the Tim Gunn smack down on Gretchen. We rewound it and watched it again after the initial episode ended. Because it was just that good.

The next thing to look forward to?

Next week's episode and the ensuing awkwardness which will play out between Gretchen and TG.

That's goooooood television, people.

Thoughts on Grief

8.25.2010
So, a friend of mine recently had a miscarriage.
And it has made me think about Grief.

Having not experienced a miscarriage myself, I felt ill qualified to offer help/advice. I remember when Ella was in the NICU and I felt like I was withering inside. The hardest part was not knowing anyone who had been through the same experience. People kept saying how terrible it must be for us. But I wanted someone to say "I know exactly how terrible this is for you".

To leave for the hospital to have your first baby, go through the labor and birth process and to return home 2 days later to an empty house seemed so completely wrong. The little crib was empty and everything was like how it was when we left it, but somehow more empty and quiet because there was the knowledge that a baby's cries and diapers and feedings were supposed to be there.

3.10.2005
10:00 pm

I had a hard night tonight. It's been 2 weeks and that was their
initial projected time frame for Ella's stay in the hospital. I am feeling
discouraged. I sobbed for about 20 minutes tonight because I don't know how much
longer I can stand being at home when she's away and living without her day in
and day out. It is hard to be patient when each days passes and I get to see my
little baby for 1 hour total. I wonder often if she even knows who I am. She
sees so many nurses for so many hours of the day. I hope she knows me, but deep
down I'm not sure.

And then a stranger in Wal*Mart came to my rescue. And it helped me immensely.
3.15.2005

After my NICU visit today, I went to WalMart to buy some groceries and
a young woman was in front of me in line at the photo counter and saw a picture
of Ella and asked if I had just had a baby. I said I had, but that she was in
the NICU. The woman said her daughter, who was now 6 months old, had been in the
NICU for 10 days from ingesting amniotic fluid during birth. She said that she
understood how hard it was and how that was the worst time of her life. She said
we should just hold on because even though it was so hard for them, in
retrospect, it was just a short time and everything was okay. This was just what
I needed. I have longed to speak with someone who understood what we were going
through. Even though it was only a 2 minute conversation, I felt so much better.
It was so encouraging to hear hopefulness from someone who has been there.

A friend of my friend, who also went through a miscarriage, wrote this post on her blog which I found extremely helpful. Read it here.

Kinder Orientation

8.23.2010
Last night was Ella's Kindergarten Orientation. We started by going to a School and then the students and their families boarded a school bus and were taken to the Kindergarten Center (which houses Kindergartens from 3 local Elementary schools).

Ella was ecstatic. The bus, the students, the new shoes. When we arrived we sat in her classroom and marveled at the different mini stations...art, weather, listening, computers, etc. The kids were supposed to play outside, however a sudden thunder storm forced them to story time with the Principal instead. before they left they had this conversation...

Teacher: You see them black clouds in the sky? What do they mean?
Students: RAIN!

I am really hoping that was a slip of the tongue at the end of a very busy day of orientations and not an indication of the stellar grammar skills which will soon be taught to my child.

We are all so excited for next Monday and the very first day of Kindergarten!

We're getting close to the end!

I can't believe I have made it through this many weeks, especially due to my candy debacle in a previous week! LOL!

However, another week of the So You Think You're Crafty competition is here and I am one of the final four! This week's theme is...

Once again, I just LOVED how my craft turned out.
But can YOU guess which one is mine?

The Baby Name Game

8.22.2010
Okay....so I have to reneg baby name rule #3..."Can't end in the letter "A".

After much discussion we have narrowed the field to two options, both of which end in an "A".

And, no, I'm not going to tell you. It's our little secret.
Sorry!

Thank you SO MUCH for all of your amazing suggestions!

2

Look-Alike

8.21.2010
After years of thinking my kids don't particularly look like me,
this photo appeared in my camera's memory card...

Evangeline looking very much like little Emilie.
And it made me happy.

Yesterday's Humiliation

8.20.2010
After I have just hopped out of the shower and headed to my bedroom to get dressed.

(ring...ring)

Evangeline: Hello?

(silence)

Evangeline: My Mommy is here and she's NAKED!

Me: Evangeline! Give me the phone!!!

(hands over the phone)

Me: Hello?

Doctor's Office: Yes, we were just calling to remind you about Tuesday's prenantal appointment. (pause.....chuckle) Are you really naked?

Me: Yes, I just hopped out of the shower. I guess it's time for a talk about acceptable phone phrases.

Doctor's Office: Yes, I would say so. (laughing)

At the Movies: A Cautionary Tale

8.19.2010

Don't see this film...
It's. Not. Funny.
At All.

Ladies and Gentlemen...

The crying has officially taken hold.
Yes, it's another post about pregnancy,
but when you're pregnant is there anything else you really think about?
Not me anyway.

So, last week Evangeline got her very first birthday party invite for just her.
She was so excited and actually slept with the invite.
We RSVPed and I planned on the excitement ahead for this Friday night.
Matt and I are going on a date tonight, which I planned around this party.

And I'm the doofus who mis-read the invite.
And the party was last night.
And she missed it.
And I have been crying about what a bad Mom I am ever since.
Crying and crying and crying some more.

28 weeks

8.18.2010
So, everything is the same....except...

My excitement is growing.
I can't even remember why I was obsessed with having a boy.
Okay, I do, BUT...

I am now officially and unequivocally thrilled at the prospect of another little fem-bot joining this family. Little pink bows and size 0 pattern leather mary-janes at church can make any Mommy's heart tingle with excitement.

I finished editing these photos of baby Samuel for my friend and looking at this sweet face reminds me that in a few weeks I will be looking at a new little Ahern face.

And yes, I am fully considering taking MY baby's photos at Kirsti's house, just for this awesome bench she has in her bedroom.

Another Week of SYTYC

8.16.2010
I made 2nd place in last week's poll.
In case you didn't know, my project were the BILINGUAL BLOCKS shown here.

This week's theme is ANIMALS and boy, am I intimidated!
As we get down to the final weeks, the crafts are so stellar that I want to vote for them ALL!

Here are this week's crafts...

What was YOUR Sunday like?

Al Fresco

8.12.2010
Evangeline has been going through an Al Fresco phase this month. And that means no clothing. Or at least no clothing on her bottom half.

Now, you know we have some cute clothes for our kids. With each season comes new threads from various stores around the Lancaster area, but little Evangeline just isn't having it. She awakens, dresses in clothing and around 4 o'clock that same day, like an irreverent ritual, whatever she is wearing on her lower half is taken off and discarded somewhere in our house.

Every day when Daddy arrives home I hear the same dialog.

(Front Door Opens)

Matt: "I'm Home!"
Girls: "Daddy's Home"

(Girls run to great Daddy.)

Matt: Eva...where are your panties?

And so our life continues in a rhythm of funny moments, morning sickness, reality television and no panties. Life is good.

Note: No photo with this post. You know the reason.

8.11.2010
WOW! I have made it through another week at SO YOU THINK YOU'RE CRAFTY, but just barely. Last week's craft was great in theory and struggled coming to fruition! LOL! Oh well, we all have those crafts, don't we?

Good news is I am in LOVE with my craft for this week's theme: Cultural.
