Backyard Bounty

9.01.2015
Recently we thought we spotted a pear tree in our backyard. Today I went to investigate and found purple and green grapevines, two types of apple trees and a pear tree. Wha?!!

Bianca was my best helper in picking fruit from our backyard.

There were so many apples we realized we needed a ladder. Hello, backyard orchard!

I mean...c'mon. Mother Nature for the WIN!

We filled 5 huge buckets with fruit and we are feasting and making plans for some weekend canning. Our backyard harvest included 7 lbs concord grapes, 10 lbs granny smith apples, 9 lbs pears, and 12 lbs other apples..I think they are Gala.

Fresh Pear Gallette with almond struesel topping. Yes please.

Canned some homemade applesauce made from the Gala apples at 1:00 am. You know, like everybody does. And the applesauce tastes AH-MAZING, by the way.

The next day I canned 10 quarts of concord grape juice. 4 year old Bianca helped me pick the grapes from our backyard, take them off their stems, wash them, and fill the jars. I could not have done it without her!

As far as the pears go, I am thinking about making this Spiced Vanilla Pear Jam. How AMAZING does that sound?! I am also making apple pie filling from the Granny Smith apples (because I strongly believe that apple pies should be made from GS's. Every time).

I am pretty giddy about this. Feeling like a Domestic Goddess/Pioneer Woman/Happy Homemaker as I line my pantry shelves with lovely canned goods. I did not learn to can from my mother, although she canned like crazy! I am learning as I go with the help of the internet. I am ordering Ball Complete Book of Home Preservingand maybe also Ball Blue Book Guide To Preservingto help me really get the basics under my belt.  As I understand it, these are the Bibles of home canning.

Fun domestic adventures ahead!!

What?! All of that was in your backyard and you had no idea. That's crazy! What a great haul.

Fresh pear pies are the best! You make them just like an apple pie, but the filling ends up being just different enough in flavor to make a really unique pie. Also great with vanilla ice cream, just like apple pie.
