Since we moved away from Utah (7 years ago) we have had a harder and harder time keeping up with the likes and dislikes of our family. Our nieces and nephews are suddenly teenagers and a dinosaur toy is no longer a safe bet for a birthday gift. I assume our family in Utah feels the same as our kids grow older. And while the old saying goes, "Money is the gift which never offends", we like giving more personalized gifts.
Also, each year I would see things I really wanted and think If only I could get that! and then my birthday would near and when asked what I wanted there was always a blank. Does this happen to anyone else?
The perfect solution for these problems? The Amazon.com Wish Lists.
You can create a Wish List for each member of your family. It can include items sold on Amazon.com BUT it can also include items from any other online retailer. Awesome!
Your wishlist has it's own, easily share-able, web address AND it stores your address privately, so anyone can purchase for you from your list and Amazon will send it right to you without making your address visible.
Also, when someone buys something from your list it makes it so that another person can't buy that for you, BUT it doesn't ruin the surprise for you (the receiver). It stays visible to you until after you have received it. Bonus!
If anyone does accidentally buy the same gift twice you can return the gift to Amazon for free and they will credit you the amount WITHOUT telling the gift-giver you returned it.
You can also make a Wish List that is private. I love this for compiling lists of ideas I have for gifts for other people, kids books I want to buy eventually, and scholastic books I want to order in the future. You can also include the link in Birthday Party invites for your kids to give party guests an idea of what your child is interested in.
Check out our family's Amazon Wishlists and you can see how they work!

I totally did this for my birthday this year and my husband didn't read the list very closely. He read the rice cooker as a deep fat fryer and the spot bot carpet cleaner as a Bissell full carpet cleaner. Then on the actual day he looked a the list again and bought a rice cooker but my SIL had already bought it. Needless to say all of my presents went back to the store. It's a good thing I like him! :)
That is a pretty net idea! I keep a running wish list on my blog so at Christmas or my birthday, Mothers Day etc my husband just hits the tag 'wish list' on it and everything I want comes up with links and pictures for him. It makes it easy for him and easy for me!
I hope your stuff gets there before the move :-)
When I read you moved from Utah 7 years ago I realized I've been reading your blog for that long. That's kinda crazy
