Healthy Stuff: The Turkey Bacon Myth

3.20.2014
People have been asking for some healthy food tips here.

I am DEFINITELY no expert (or even close to one), but I will share the little bits and pieces I have learned on my weight loss journey.

Let's talk bacon.
It's the greatest, right?
Seriously.

But I think we can all agree it's not the healthiest food on the planet (who knew?...wait, everybody). So you're thinking...how about Turkey Bacon? Sounds so ideal.  All the bacon goodness and turkey is so much better for you, right?

Wrong.

Here are the basic health stats for both per slice...

Pork Bacon: 35 calories, 1 gram saturated fat and 130 milligrams of sodium.

Oscar Mayer Original Turkey Bacon: 35 calories; 1 gram saturated fat; 180 milligrams sodium
Trader Joe’s Uncured Turkey Bacon: 30 calories; 1.5 grams saturated fat; 180 milligrams sodium

MORE sodium? Oh yes.  Now, I can take this kind of deception from Oscar Mayer. I mean, I expect them to be kinda shady, but Trader Joe's?!! How could you?! I thought we meant something to each other.  They aren't all pretending though.

Butterball Thin and Crispy Turkey Bacon:  17 calories; 0.25 grams saturated fat; 90 milligrams sodium

That's MUCH better, but how does it taste? Not horrible, but not really good either. This is one of those times that I would much rather have my Pork Bacon and eat it too....in severe moderation.

The moral? READ. THE. LABEL.

I agree on the bacon, but something I can get behind is turkey pepperoni. I think it tastes as good and now let's be honest it is still bad for you, but much less fat and overall healthier than regular pepperoni. Beware of sodium in both, but unfortunately it is worse in the turkey. Luckily with a larger serving size overall though you can break it down.

Hormel regular pepperoni: 14 slices per serving, Calories 140, Total Fat 13g,Saturated Fat 6g, Sodium 490mg

Hormel Turkey pepperoni:17 slices per serving, Calories 70, Total Fat 4g, Saturated Fat 1.5g, Sodium 640mg
