I am in LOVE with NPR (National Public Radio).
One Saturday in the car after having been married a short time, Matt turned the radio to NPR while the show "Car Talk" was on. I protested. A radio show about fixing cars? Not. Fun. But I was wrong. Matt insisted and we listened together as people from all over the country called the show to discuss their car problems with two mechanics. Soon I was chuckling. Then I was laughing. Then I was hysterical! We still listen to it every chance we get.
But my true love affair is with This American Life.
This American life is a 1 hour radio program, divided into "acts" that all explore a certain theme or topic. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, poignant and interesting and addictive. I have recently converted my friend to T.A.L. and I want to convert you too. This is ideal for people who commute and I listen to it while I craft.
You can listen to the archives of each show for FREE at thisamericanlife.org. I have not even come close to listening to all of them, but I have my current TOP 6 to get you started.
Episode 339 - The Break Up
Acts 1, 2 and 3 are amazing. Act 4 is meh.
Episiode 394 - Bait and Switch
All acts are great in this one! A perfect blend of funny and serious.
Episode 203 - Recordings for Someone
Act 3 is the only snore in this one, but some might find it fascinating. But the super-star is Act 4. I haven't laughed so hard in probably 10 years as I did at this Act. You'll never hear the words "The Little Mermaid" again without laughing.
Episode 401 - Parent Trap
Fascinating and thought provoking all the way through.
Episode 001 - New Beginnings
The very first episode in which the show was called "Your Radio Playhouse". A fascinating look at beginnings and an AMAZING start to this program. All acts are really great.
Episode 370 - Ruining It for the Rest of Us
Episode 370 - Ruining It for the Rest of Us
This episode is another great mix of funny and serious. I love the very interesting first act about Immunizations and the act by Mike Birbiglia is hilarious. Like, die laughing hilarious. A great episode all around.
Honorable Mentions:
389: Frenemies
396: #1 Party School
395: Middle of the Night
Seriously...go and listen right now!
I want to know what you think.

Thank you so much Emilie. I have been enjoying listening sooooo much. Even did some major cleaning and listening took my mind off the drudgery. You always have something to offer. Great stuff.
I must admit that I have never listened to NPR, I don't even know what station it is on in SLC!
