Fashion Wrap Up: Oscars 2014

3.03.2014
Too many nudes, people! TOO MANY NUDES!  Ugh! Drives me crazy. Why would you want to look like a lump of flesh tone? WHY?!

Okay, with that out of the way, let's get rolling.  Last night's Oscars was a 50/50 for fashion. Some good and some bad.  It was also kind of boring in the fashion department (maybe because of all of the stupid nude gowns?), but there were a few looks definitely worth mentioning.

RIGHT GOWN, WRONG HAIR
Jennifer Garner looked SO amazing in this dress. And did you see the way the fringe moved when she walked? Awesome.  But her hair looks very sloppy.  If you have a dress with this much movement the hair needs to be simple. sleek and pulled away from her face.  Amy Adams looks a bit severe to me.  This is exactly the opposite problem and Jennifer Garner.  When the gown has this much structure I would have liked softer hair to balance the look.
I adore this gown and accessories on Emma Watson. And the red lip? I die. But her hair is a ratted mess? What gives?

RIGHT HAIR, WRONG GOWN
I have been harping on Anne Hathaway's short hair for a while. I like the cut, she just hasn't got the texture correct until now. It looks feminine and strong and shiny.  But the gown is too much.  The hardware is too heavy. The black clutch is too black.

NO NUDES IS GOOD NEWS
Sally Hawkins looks a mess. The sloppy hair. The nun-like gown that covers every inch of her is a wash of flesh-tone. Ugh. Portia De Rossi is so, so weird in this look. Instead of statuesque she looks gangly and the different shapes of the cut-out are just way over-the-top.

Meryl Streep looks bland and beige from the waist up. Her hair, skin-tone and top are all the same shade. This makes her disappear completely on film.  How did Julie Delpy manage to look so old and frumpy? I blame the top of this dress.  It makes her breasts appear saggy and her arms disappear. She's so pretty, but this is awful.

THE NUDE EXCEPTIONS
Honestly, I would rather they not wear this color, but if you have to wear nude this is the way to go.  Cate Blanchett looked super-glam in this dress and I loved the hair and make-up.  Jenna Dewan-Tatum looks just gorgeous, I just wish she had a slightly darker lip.

AMAZING COUPLES
Who knew Jason Sudakis could be so dreamy? And look at Olivia Wilde! THAT is how you rock preggers. Dax Shepherd and Kristen Bell look great together. One more nude gown that gets my reserved approval.

JUST PLAIN BAD
Viola Davis wore a really bad Bridesmaids dress which needed both tailoring and ironing.  Oh, Goldie Hawn. I know you're a hippy. But it's the OSCARS. Run a comb through your hair.

Anna Kendrick is so cool, but this look is completely wrong for her body type. She is not terribly tall and she has cut her proportions in half with the red sheer panel at her waist, making her appear shorter and wider. Naomi Watts came close, but a necklace should NEVER touch the neckline of a gown. I makes you look too choked. I also hate those black shoes and handbag.

PREGNANCY RIGHTS AND WRONGS
I normally don't like moo-moo type gowns on pregnant women. I prefer a more fitted look, but Kerry Washington looked marvelous in this lavender gown. It hugged her curves just enough to not be too much of a tent.  Conversely, Elsa Pataky wore this monstrosity of a maternity gown.  Instead of accentuating her curves it makes her look like she's smuggling a bowling ball and no one wants to see saggy side-boob. No one.

JUST PLAIN GOOD
Sandra Bullock looked divine. Love the dark color. Love the fabric. Love the waist detail. Love the sideswept hair. Love it all. Okay, I wish she had done a nude nail polish, but, whatever.  Lupita Nyoungo Was really gorgeous.  I loved the gown, but not the rest of the styling. I found the headband distracting. I also wish she had not worn the arm cuss.  Still glorious, but not quite perfection.

Kate Hudson was pretty much flawless.  I mean, what is there to say about this look. It's perfect.  I've been hating what Julia Roberts has been wearing to award shows this year, but tonight she turned it out.  Elegant. Different. Sophisticated and sexy.  Again, I would have worn a slightly darker lip, but that's splitting hairs.

Jennifer Lawrence looks lovely in this look. I like the turned around necklace and the fit...perfection.  It's like they painted this onto her body.  I'm just getting a bit bored of this same style of dress on her. Charlize Theron was perfect. Perfect!  I die. The entire thing is just too amazing.

THE MEN
Chiwetel Ejiofor really turned it out. Well done. Hotter than hot.  Jared Leto, I don't mind a Jesus look. Really, it's fine. But this cream coat is just so bad.  I could have handled the red bow tie if you just would've worn a black coat. Oh, and the pocket square....blech. I did love your speech though.

Bradley Cooper wore the perfect tux for his body. It's well tailored and he looks like a movie star.  Matthew McConaughey also fell prey to the Isaac-from-the-Love-Boat white suit coat.  And the black vest made it look like he was wearing two suits.  Also, those cuffs are tailored incorrectly. Notice the difference between his pant cuffs and Bradley's?

I'm over this suit, Kevin Spacey. It seems like you always wear this same, tired, blue suit.  And Pharrell...I'll put up with the weird clothes at the Grammy awards because that's what the Grammy's are for: rock stars to dress in really stupid clothes. I mean, people arrive via huge egg. But this is the OSCARS. Don't be a doofus and don't wear shorts.

Alright Bloggies! Weigh in!
Who was your best and worst?!
Are you liking the nudes? Haitng them?

I thought that Adele Dazeene - oops, I mean Idina Menzel looked amazing on the red carpet.. She wore a different dress when she sang but the red carpet dress was awesome!

I loved all the same ones as you, especially Sandra Bullock. That green dress on the pregnant lady might be the worst thing I have EVER seen. OY. Also did you notice the super short pants on Zac Efron and what's his name from 500 days of summer? Must be a new thing? I loved Naomi Watts and I loved the headband on the best supporting actress girl.

Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson were my favorite after Sandra Bullock, also.

Thanks soooo much for the post Emile. Yeah I agree with a lot of what you say. Nudes were so boring. I absolutely hate the color of Lupita's dress . Of all the colors that would go with her skin tone this pale color was NOT one of them. I hate the bodice on someone so thin and devoid of bosoms.
BTW what did you think of Angelina Jolie's gown? I wax and wane depending on the photo.

i love your breakdown, and you find words and details that i want to say but forget. so cheers for going over everything.

i do agree with all, EXCEPT for Kate Hudson. i don't like that dress. it's like a gladiator dress with shoulder pads.

if i ever go to a red carpet event, i am hiring you as my stylist.

Love these posts. You could be a fashion blogger.
- I saw one comment on a site saying Anne Hathaway was wearing a breast plate. I thought that hit the nail on the head.
- I kind of like Cate Blanchett's dress, but it looked to me like it had cotton balls on it. They looked kind of like what grows in cotton fields!
- If Anna Kendrick's dress didn't have that sheer waist panel, I think I would have loved her dress. I thought the part above the waist was very cool!
- I hadn't seen the side view of Elsa Pataky. I think I could have lived without the thought of saggy side boob. :)

My favorite was Sandra Bullock. She looked awesome
