Life Lately

6.20.2015
Is it getting quiet around this blog again? Life is full to overflowing and there's not even time to think straight.

The redheads still have three weeks of school before their "Summer Break". Year round school is brutal. These longer, lighter, Summer days mean sending them to bed at their usual bedtime, but it's still light outside. The worst.

Ella is working on a final project for school that involves building a shoe-box parade float about our County. Guess what I'll be helping with for hours tomorrow?

She also has a school concert coming up and needs to be dressed as a pioneer. I have come to realize (and of necessity, accept) that moving to Utah means acquiring pioneer costumes in every size. I'll be sewing her a skirt, apron, and bonnet this weekend. Utah needs a Pioneer Costume Store that's open 24/7 and has a drive-up window. Read: million dollar idea.

Jude has had a recent jump in his vocabulary and I'm grateful. You forget how draining it can be deciphering a toddler's wants through their unique brand of pointing at nothing and sobbing  uncontrollably.

I am trying to force myself to take at least 15 minutes of recharging time for myself each day. This seems like a load of Oprah propaganda, but is actually working. These snippets of time are generally spent laying in Matt's early Fathers Day Gift: a backyard hammock. This genius gift is akin to a bowling ball with HOMER on it and I'm not sorry at all. It's freaking awesome to lay in the hammock in the evenings and get eaten alive by mosquitos. You're welcome for the O+ food source, mosquito population.

Tonight I spent a few minutes on our couch reading a Cook's Country Recipe Annual and marking meal ideas to make myself even fatter. Then Matt and I fake-planned launching our own food truck. (More millions coming our way).

This post is making life sound all very zen and hammock-y, but I'm struggling. My mental health seems to go in waves these days. Some stretches of time are filled with self-confidence. I can DO this mother-of-five thing! And then I drop down, filling with self doubt, and the house becomes a mess and every day seems hard. I am in that valley now, clawing my way out.

Sewing and hammock-time and recipe annuals are helping. So are monthly girl's-night dinners with friends and painting my toenails and watching Odd Mom Out on Bravo...it's hilarious, by the way.

This is life right now.

Sometimes life needs to be hammocky (adding that great word to my vocabulary) and it usually is when I am clawing myself out of a big pit of depression and feelings of being over-whelmed. This is usually apparent by how long clean laundry sits on top of the dryer and how often we eat out that week. 😁 I admire all your hard work being a mom of five and making sure you take time for you. Mom/kid balance is a struggle.

so i obviously don't know you personally, but i love your realness. and i just by following you on your blog, IG, FB, you do so much. it may sound cheesy, but give yourself credit where credit is due. you are doing so much and just as a mom of one i know i do a lot (and i konw that majority of the stuff i do, do goes unseen) I can only imagine the things you do on a daily basis as a mom of five (and countless other roles that you hold) that go unseen. but it counts and it matters and you are doing it, and doing it well. i've dealt with depression in my past, and it's the worse. on top of caring for your family you are caring for yourself with helps for you to care for your family...anyways. i'm rambling and going in circles. just keep swimming!
