Hospital Day

3.19.2009

Today we will be going to the hospital for 5-6 hours with Fifi. She was born with Urinary Reflux and last year our Urologist in Utah told us we could take her off of her antibiotics and just bring her back if she ever got another UTI. She hasn't.
So we took her for her 1 year follow up a few months back and our Urologist here in Delaware was very concerned. He said children with this condition should ALWAYS be on antibiotics for the first 3-4 years or they could sustain permanent kidney damage. Well, that freaked me right out. He ordered more thorough tests, which will be happening today. She will be sedated and tested and then observed for a few hours. And I am very nervous and stressed about it.
I don't know how traumatizing it might be for her, so last night we went to the park for a picnic dinner. It started out warm, but as the sun went down it got very chilly. We bundled the girls up for a swing.
This is Fifi, hanging on with freezing hands and loving every minute of it.

Good luck! Let me know how it goes. What doc is she seeing? As I write this comment from my luxurious accommodations over at Christiana Hosp., all I have to say is "kidneys suck!" =)

Everything will be fine. And your little one probably won't remember any of it. My oldest had the same thing until she was able 7. She's actually never, in her whole life, had a UTI so it was just by chance that we found the reflux. She's had to do those test many times and doesn't remember them at all. It's actually hard on us mommies those. Hang in there, it will all be ok.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you all today. Kiddo hospital visits are no fun, but experience tells me that it is harder on us Mamas than anyone else.

Our daughter had urinary reflux when she was born, and had a UTI when she was only 6 weeks old. It was very scary! She was on prophylactic antibiotics for a little over a year. We decided to have corrective surgery when she was 14 months old. There have been no further complications, and she doesn't remember a thing.

I am a new reader of your blog, and I just wanted to leave a comment so that you would know that I know what you are going through and how hard it is to see your baby going through tests. I'll be praying for you and for your daughter.

Just gonna leave you a bit of medical perspective in case it helps....Antibiotics for urinary reflux has become a pretty controversial subject over the last few years. There is a lot of discussion over if kids need to be on them at all. Studies are pointing towards them not making a difference with preventing damage. So I would say that the doc that is saying they should ALWAYS be on meds is maybe exagerating that a bit. Just my 2 cents....
IA pediatrician who can't log in for some reason...you know who I am =).
